The Holding Environment
A brief reflection on what leaders actually provide.
A brief reflection on what leaders actually provide.
A holding environment is not a place. It is the set of relational and organizational conditions a leader creates so that people can do the difficult, often vulnerable work of growth.
It is the trust that lets a teacher admit a lesson failed. It is the time that lets a team think before it acts. It is the consistency that lets people risk, knowing the ground will not shift beneath them.
When I ask myself what I am actually doing as a leader, the honest answer is often this: I am building and tending a holding environment. Everything else, the plans, the initiatives, the data, rests on it.
